Four digits do the heavy lifting: 3 is “tree”, 4 is “fower”, 5 is “fife”, and 9 is “niner”. These are the ones that blur into other sounds over static, so they were reshaped for clarity. The rest are spoken normally, though you will sometimes hear “wun” for 1 and “ait” for 8 clipped tight on a busy net.
Why these four digits change
Each change fixes a specific failure. “Three” loses its soft th over a poor connection and can sound like “free,” so it becomes “tree.” “Four” can be heard as the word “for,” so a second syllable is added: “fower.” “Five” is dangerously close to “fire” and to “nine,” so it sharpens to “fife.” And “nine” becomes “niner” to stand apart from “five” and from the German “nein,” which matters on shared international channels. None of it is arbitrary — every altered digit solves a real mishearing.
Reading multi-digit numbers
You do not say “fifty-nine.” You read each digit on its own: 59 is “fife niner”, 100 is “wun zero zero”, and 2025 is “too zero too fife”. Speaking digit by digit removes any chance of mishearing a grouped number, which matters when the figure is a grid reference, a frequency or a serial number where one wrong digit changes everything.
Zero is always “zero”
Never “oh.” Saying “oh” invites confusion with the letter O, so the military keeps zero as zero every time. It is a small rule that prevents a whole class of mistakes when letters and numbers appear together, like in a vehicle plate, a part number or an aircraft callsign.
Large numbers, decimals and points
Round figures have set words: 100 can be read “hundred” and 1000 “tousand” (stressed on the first syllable), though digit-by-digit is always safe. A decimal point is spoken as “decimal” or “point” — pick one and stick with it in a transmission. So a radio frequency of 118.5 reads “wun wun ait decimal fife.” Punctuation has words too: a full stop is “stop,” a hyphen is “dash.”
